End of the day update on Monday, Feb 3rd. We have a 30 day pause on the tariffs. As far as it looks, this will halt tariffs coming in/going out. Have not heard about the “de minimus” $800 exemption yet. Will update when I have that information.
On Feb 1st, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs in response to US tariffs on Canadian products.
Important for customers in Canada to know: Bear Dance Crafts is a 100% Canadian owned and operated company for over 25 years. We only ship from Canada. Any duties or tariffs that goods are not exempt from have already been paid by us, you will not have to pay anything extra on your orders (just the usual PST, GST/HST).
While the majority of our goods come from the EU, we do carry some products from the USA. We are not sure if these will be subject to the 25% across-the-board tariffs that the Canadian government announced on Feb 1st (in retaliation of the import tariffs placed on Canadian goods by the US government).
Important for customers in the USA: Tariff exemption for packages under $800 halted!
What this means is that when you order you will likely be paying a tariff (a kind of import duty tax) on items that are shipped to you. We have heard it is 25% across the board. But, what is unclear (to me, right now) is if that includes imports that are imported. Perhaps you buy doll knit, manufactured in the EU, I don’t know if that will be subject to 25% tariff, or a different tariff that will be placed on EU goods. What I am guessing is that border service agents will be dealing with a lot of smaller value packages coming in from Canada, China, Mexico, etc and having to assess them for the tariffs, hand them off to USPS (or couriers) and then customers will be presented with a bill to pay to receive their goods. This is how it works in Canada (CBSA, the Canada Post), so I am just guessing. I don’t know if it will cause a massive build up of goods at the border, delaying orders. I don’t know if they will see the tariff codes for the EU and not levy any tariffs. As it was just announced and will come into effect after this first weekend in February, there are so many unknowns and guessing. We do know the $800 duty-free exemption is no longer.
If you are in the USA, and wish to place an order, I will likely hold off on shipping to see how this pans out (at least the first week of February).
Which products do we carry that are from the USA?
– Stick ‘n Stitch printable sheets: https://www.beardancecrafts.com/product/stick-n-stitch-individual-printable-sheets/
Sulky of America produces these, however Taiwan is listed as country of origin.
– Glitter wool felt: https://www.beardancecrafts.com/product-category/glitter-metallic-pattern-felt/glitter-on-wool-felt/
Produced in the USA on EU wool felt.
– Metallic wool felt: https://www.beardancecrafts.com/product-category/glitter-metallic-pattern-felt/metallic-on-wool-felt/
Produced in the USA on EU wool felt.
– Wood figures from North America (we also carry EU wood figures): https://www.beardancecrafts.com/product/peg-people/
Produced in the USA from North American hardwood.
I think that’s it? We do carry some felt colours imported from the USA, as they have them custom produced in the EU.
Will these products increase in price? Probably. They might not fall under the 25% tariff coming into Canada, but they will likely be subject to higher tariffs being imported into the USA (if not 100% USA product). Then there is the CAD to USD exchange.
There are many factors that will come into play.
Right now we will keep the current stock at the listed price. We may have to hold off on restocking these products until the tariffs come down, are clearer, etc, we just can’t say right now.
What we can say is THANK YOU, especially to our Canadian customers for choosing to shop with Bear Dance Crafts.
It’s been a tough time with the 2024 postal strike and many other economic factors in the last couple of years.
Thank you for choosing to shop with a small Canadian business, especially in these challenging times,
Natalie
